Supplementing Weight Loss with Garcinia Cambogia: Is it Safe?
In recent years involving weight loss trends, there have been numerous products on the market and many programs suggesting the “best” use for their particular product. Years ago, weight loss supplementation became popular with products to endorse the slowing of fat storage in the body. One product, called Garcinia Cambogia, is a supplement advertising the slowing of fat storage in the body for weight loss.
Garcinia Cambogia and Weight Loss
Garcinia Cambogia has been reported to block the body’s fat storing process, which also suppresses appetite in the meantime [1]. In addition to the supplement’s ability to block certain body processes, it has been shown to regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, suggesting this supplement to be ahead of the times in weight loss and diet support.
While Garcinia Cambogia has shown promise in the weight-loss world, is this supplement something everyone ought to use to lose a few extra pounds? This product works by inducing fat-burning properties in the body through the active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, or HCA.
Hydroxycitric Acid
HCA has been demonstrated from studies to slow fat generation and to curb appetite, among assisting in blood glucose levels and cholesterol levels. While the active ingredient in this product appears to be the perfect solution for weight loss, studies have suggested otherwise. A recent study on weight loss using Garcinia Cambogia found only a small decrease in actual weight loss, demonstrating about two pounds more lost when compared to others not on the supplement. In addition, the study revealed that the additional weight loss in the Garcinia Cambogia group may have been from additional variables rather than from the supplement itself.
Common Side Effects
With any supplement and medication, there are expected side-effects. Garcinia Cambogia is no different. Some of the side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, headaches, diarrhea, and upset stomach [2]. In addition to the stated side effects, the FDA in 2009 gave a strict warning for all Garcinia Cambogia users to halt the use, citing a rise in liver issues due to the regular consumption of the supplement. While there are additional ingredients in the supplement, there is a level of uncertainty as to whether the Garcinia Cambogia was the source of the liver issues, thus making this supplement possibly damaging to health.
Research and Effectiveness
While there is more research needed on the safety and effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia for weight loss, studies have shown there to be a slightly positive effect from its use. A 2011 randomized clinical trial on weight loss and Garcinia Cambogia found there to be a small amount of weight loss from short-term use of this product when compared to a placebo [3]. The small effect, as reported in the clinical trial, suggests the amount of weight loss however, “is too small to be of any clinical relevance.” This suggests that while some weight loss can be had from using Garcinia Cambogia, the overall effects should be weighed for its optimal use.
The Final Word
Weight loss is a hard endeavor for many individuals. Some have attempted and succeeded only to find weight to slowly creep back. It is recommended to continue to live a healthy lifestyle inclusive of a well-balanced and proper diet mixed with plentiful physical activity. Some supplements in the market advertise as being conducive for weight loss or for increasing energy, but caution must be taken when using these products. Be sure to consult with a physician or qualified healthcare provider prior to taking any supplement to be certain if the product can benefit your body. In addition, if weight loss is a struggle, a physician can determine if there are any other underlying health problems which may need to be addressed before weight can be expelled. Lastly, personal trainers and exercise physiologists are educated in weight loss programs and can benefit your weight loss journey for a healthy lifestyle.
